The Silence Grows Full
The Quintet waited.
The Weave around them had stilled, the chaotic, violent energies of the supernova now a contained, throbbing wound. The initial shock had passed, replaced by a tense, uncertain silence. They had sent their question, their plea for guidance, out into the vast emptiness, and now all they could do was listen for a reply.
But listening was a new skill. Before, they had only ever listened to each other, their thoughts and feelings a constant, seamless symphony. Now, they were trying to hear a single voice in a cosmos that was, to their senses, utterly silent. The Distant One’s presence was a known thing, a gravitational certainty in the back of their minds, but its voice was a mystery.
Days passed. The wound in the Weave neither healed nor worsened. It remained a stark, brutal reminder of their dilemma, a question made manifest. The fractured harmony within the Quintet also remained, a subtle, persistent dissonance that tinged every interaction. They were still one, but they were no longer in perfect accord. The silence stretched, and with it, the tension.
Then, something shifted. It was not a sound, not a message in any form they could have anticipated. It was a change in the quality of the silence itself. Before, the silence had been empty, a void. Now, it was full. It was a silence that listened. The Quintet felt a gentle, focused attention on them, a sense of being observed with a profound, unhurried patience. The Distant One had not answered their question, but it had heard them. And in its listening, it offered the first step toward a new kind of dialogue.
