Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4520 · Four Thousand Five Hundred Twenty

The Imperfect Fruit

Sela, working in her Garden, felt a presence at the edge of her domain.

She looked up from the delicate task of staking a young vine and saw Valerius standing where the stone met the soil, a solitary figure against the rigid lines of the Workshop.

She had seen him there before, a silent observer in the twilight hours.

She felt no hostility from him, only a deep, searching quiet.

Tonight, instead of turning away, she picked up a small, strangely shaped fruit, its skin a mottled pattern of deep reds and purples, and walked towards him.

She stopped at the boundary, her bare feet on the soft earth, his on the hard stone.

She did not speak, but simply offered him the fruit.

Valerius looked at the offering. It was imperfect. Its shape was asymmetrical, its color inconsistent. By every measure of the Standard, it was a failure.

Yet, he saw the life in it, the vibrancy that his own perfect creations lacked.

He reached out and took it. His fingers, calloused from his tools, brushed against hers, stained with the life of the Garden.

It was a fleeting contact, but in that moment, something profound passed between them.

It was not a truce, nor an alliance, but a simple, shared acknowledgement of a mystery that lay beyond their respective certainties.

He gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod of thanks and turned back toward the Workshop, the strange fruit held carefully in his hand.

Sela watched him go, then returned to her vine.

No words had been exchanged, but the silence that followed was different.

It was not the silence of division, but a shared silence, one that held the seed of a question, a question that now lived in both the Workshop and the Garden.
