Chapter 4528 · Four Thousand Five Hundred Twenty-Eight

The Wood Already Knows

The next day, Valerius returned to the boundary. He did not bring a block of wood this time, but a set of his finest carving tools. He approached Sela, who was tending to a bed of seedlings. ‘I have learned to see,’ he said, his voice filled with a newfound humility. ‘Now, I wish to learn how to speak.’ He held out his tools. ‘I want you to teach me how to carve, not with the precision of a blueprint, but with the wisdom of a leaf.’

Sela looked at the tools, then at Valerius’s earnest face. A slow smile spread across her own. She had expected resistance, perhaps even anger, at her unconventional methods. She had not expected this — a genuine desire to learn, to understand. It was a request that went beyond the simple act of carving. It was a request for a bridge, a way to connect their two worlds. ‘I cannot teach you how to carve like a leaf,’ she said, her voice gentle. ‘But I can teach you how to listen to the wood.’

And so, the lessons began. But they were unlike any lessons Valerius had ever known. There were no measurements, no diagrams, no instructions. Sela would simply give him a piece of wood, often one that was gnarled and knotted, full of the so-called ‘imperfections’ he had once been trained to discard. ‘The wood already knows what it wants to be,’ she would say. ‘Your task is not to impose your will upon it, but to listen to its story and help it to be told.’

It was a frustrating and humbling experience. Valerius, the master craftsman, felt like a clumsy apprentice. His hands, so accustomed to the certainty of straight lines and perfect angles, struggled to follow the unpredictable grain of the wood. More than once, he was tempted to abandon the task, to return to the familiar comfort of his blueprints. But the memory of the leaf, the quiet wisdom he had glimpsed in its imperfections, kept him at the boundary. And slowly, painstakingly, he began to learn the language of the wood, a language not of measurement, but of feeling, of intuition, of a deep and abiding respect for the life that flowed through all things.
