Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4540 · Four Thousand Five Hundred Forty

A Garden with Bones

The repaired bridge, a beautiful and strange hybrid of two philosophies, did not go unnoticed. Valerius and Sela met there the next day, not by arrangement, but by a shared, unspoken understanding.

They stood together, looking at the work of their young apprentices. The seamless joinery of Talan, softened and embraced by the living weave of the girl’s vine.

“It is… stronger than both,” Valerius said, his voice filled with a quiet reverence. He ran a hand over the vine-wrapped joint, feeling the surprising harmony between the two textures.

“It is whole,” Sela replied. “It has roots, and it has form.”

An idea, born of this small, accidental collaboration, began to take shape between them.

The Garden, for all its life, struggled with the winter rains. The soil would wash away, and young plants were often uprooted. The Workshop, for all its structure, was a sterile place, lacking the subtle, organic resilience of the Garden.

“We could build a retaining wall,” Valerius said, thinking aloud. “Here, at the edge of the slope. A series of interlocking stones, perfectly cut, to hold the soil.”

“And we could weave the roots of the strongest creepers between the stones,” Sela added, her eyes lighting up with the possibility. “The stones would provide the strength, and the roots would provide the flexibility, holding the soil together in a living net.”

It was a radical concept. Not a compromise, but a true synthesis. A project that neither community could complete on its own, and that would be stronger and more effective than anything either could build in isolation.

For the first time, they were not just observing or tolerating each other’s philosophies. They were actively seeking to combine them.

“A wall that lives,” Valerius murmured, the concept both deeply strange and profoundly right.

“A garden with bones,” Sela smiled.

It was the beginning of their first joint project. The first time they would intentionally build not at the boundary, but across it.
