Chapter 4576 · Four Thousand Five Hundred Seventy-Six

The Rocking Horse

Kesh ran a hand over the smooth, curved surface of the wood, her eyes closed. It was a child’s rocking horse, a simple commission, but she was treating it with the reverence of a masterwork.

She remembered Talan’s words, not as a set of instructions, but as a gentle encouragement to listen. ‘The wood has its own story,’ he had told her, his voice a low rumble like the shifting of ancient trees. ‘Your task is not to force it into a new shape, but to help it tell the story it already knows.’

A gruff cough from the doorway broke her concentration. It was Jorun, a craftsman of the old guard, his face a roadmap of wrinkles carved by decades of rigid adherence to the old ways. ‘Daydreaming again, girl?’ he grumbled, his eyes scanning her work with a critical gaze. ‘That’s not how Valerius taught us. You need precision, force. The wood must be tamed, not coddled.’

Kesh opened her eyes, her gaze calm and steady. ‘I am not daydreaming, Jorun. I am listening.’ She picked up a small, curved piece of wood, a runner for the rocking horse. ‘The grain here,’ she said, tracing it with her finger, ‘wants to curve this way. To force it straight would be to break its spirit. To follow it,’ she gently pressed it into place, where it fit perfectly, ‘is to find its true strength.’

Jorun scoffed, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. He watched as Kesh continued her work, her movements fluid and intuitive, a dance between creator and creation. He saw no force, no taming, only a quiet understanding. The rocking horse was taking shape, not as a product of rigid design, but as an expression of the wood’s own inherent grace. He said nothing more, but stood and watched for a long time, the seeds of a new way of thinking planted in the fertile ground of his long-held beliefs.
