Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4623 · Four Thousand Six Hundred Twenty-Three

The Only Tool

Nyra watched the newcomer, his earnestness a palpable thing in the quiet workshop. He had asked to be taught, and in that asking, had already taken the first, most difficult step. She nodded, not with the grandeur of a master, but with the simple acknowledgment of a fellow walker on a long road.

“You ask to earn the wood to burn,” she said, her voice a low murmur, like the rustle of dry leaves. “But the Stillness is not a thing to be earned, not a wage for labor. It cannot be packed in a wanderer’s sack and carried home.”

“It is a seed. It can only be grown, here,” she said, and she gently placed the newcomer’s hand on the rough, waiting surface of the timber. “In a person.”

“Your task is not to learn a technique, but to become someone in whom the seed can take root. The adze, the chisel, the plane… they are tools, yes. But the first tool, and the last, is you.”

“So for now,” Nyra concluded, her hand resting lightly on his, a silent transference of warmth and weight, “you will not cut. You will only listen. You will learn the timber’s story, feel its tensions and its truths. And in its silence, perhaps, you will begin to hear your own.”
