Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4626 · Four Thousand Six Hundred Twenty-Six

The Healed Knot

The first day of watching was a lesson in the deceptive simplicity of stillness. The newcomer, who had given his name as Soren, sat on a stool just inside the workshop’s open doors, his eyes fixed on the block of timber Nyra had designated for him. He was not to touch it. He was not to measure it. He was only to watch.

The sun arced across the sky, its light a slow, creeping thing that painted the wood in shades of gold and amber, then cooled to a soft, dusky grey. Dust motes danced in the slanted beams, and the sounds of the wider forest—the distant call of a bird, the rustle of leaves—drifted in and out of his awareness.

At first, there was a kind of peace in it. But as the hours wore on, an old, familiar impatience began to stir. It was a subtle thing, not the frantic restlessness of his former life, but a quieter, more insidious doubt.

‘What am I learning from this?’ he found himself thinking, the thought a smooth, polished stone of an idea, turning over and over in his mind. He was watching, yes, but what was the lesson? That patience was a virtue? He already knew that, in the abstract. To sit and feel it, however, was another matter entirely. It felt like… nothing. A void. A waste of precious time.

It was only late in the afternoon, when the light had softened to a bruised purple and his own thoughts had grown quiet from sheer exhaustion, that he noticed it. A tiny, almost imperceptible shift in the grain of the wood, a subtle play of shadow and light that he hadn’t seen before. It was a flaw, a small knot in the timber, but in the stillness, it seemed to take on a profound significance. He saw not an imperfection, but a point of history. A place where the tree had healed itself, where it had bent but not broken. And in that moment of seeing, the doubt that had plagued him all day finally receded. He was not just waiting. He was learning to see.
