Chapter 4628 · Four Thousand Six Hundred Twenty-Eight

The Joining Cut

Soren lowered the adze, his breath catching in his throat as he looked at the fresh wood exposed by his strike. A single, perfect curl of timber rested on the workshop floor, a testament to the brief intersection of blade and grain.

Jorun stepped closer, his weathered hands resting gently on the edge of the beam. “Feel the grain, Soren,” the master said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to harmonize with the quiet space of the workshop. “Run your fingers where the blade passed.”

Soren reached out, his fingertips tracing the smooth, shallow depression. It was warm to the touch, the fibers surprisingly unbroken. There was no jagged edge, no resistance lingering in the wood’s memory.

Nyra walked over from her own workbench, brushing fine sawdust from her heavy apron. She leaned in, her sharp eyes tracing the continuous lines of the wood. “Do you see how the grain continues without tearing?” she asked softly. “That is what happens when you do not force the tool. You didn’t impose a shape onto the knot; you asked it where it wanted to yield, and it answered.”

“An imposing cut splinters,” Jorun added, nodding toward a rejected piece of scrap in the corner. “It fights the history of the tree, demanding a form the wood cannot give. An answering cut joins that history.”

Soren looked down at his own hands, calloused but still so new to this profound patience. As he absorbed their words, he felt a deep quietude settling into his chest—a stillness he hadn’t fully realized he had been lacking. For the first time, a small seed of a thought took root in his mind: he wondered if this deep, abiding Stillness was something he might one day be capable of carrying home.
