Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4714 · Four Thousand Seven Hundred Fourteen

The Opened Rows

The mornings had grown warmer, and one such morning the garden greeted them changed. Where a single small flower had opened along the little rows, there were several now, a scatter of pale yellow blooms lifting their faces to the harbor light. The four came down to the low wall and stopped, and for a moment none of them knelt. They only stood and took in the sight, the way one takes in something that has quietly gotten ahead of you.

The girl pointed, and the boy followed her hand from bloom to bloom, counting each one under his breath. The man said nothing, but the sea-lined corners of his eyes softened. The woman stood a little apart and let the fullness of it reach her, not one hopeful sliver of color now, but many, opened all along the earth they had tended, without anyone having asked them to.

It came to her then, standing there, that the practice had begun to give something back of its own accord. She had knelt and tended and made room, morning after morning, and somewhere in the quiet the garden had learned to answer. The stillness was no longer only something they carried down to the soil; it was something the soil had begun to return, the way the earth gives back what is given to it, quietly, and more than was ever put in.
