Chapter 4731 · Four Thousand Seven Hundred Thirty-One

A Row to Tend

She watched his nod, a simple gesture that held the weight of a world. It asked nothing of her, and yet it offered everything: not words, not welcome exactly, but a quiet certainty that there was room here for one more. And so, after a moment in which her whole life seemed to gather itself, she took a tentative step and crossed the invisible line that had separated the ordinary world from the garden.

The rope-maker watched her come. His expression was unreadable, as the keeper’s had once been unreadable to him, and he understood now that this was not coldness but patience, the willingness to let a person arrive in their own time. Without a word, he led her to a small patch of earth at the edge of the rows, where a handful of thirsty-looking sprouts leaned toward the light. He did not explain. He only showed.

He handed her a watering can, its metal surface cool and smooth against her palms, and stepped back to let her hold it alone. She looked at the sprouts, and at the can, and at him, and then she began. It was a small thing, a first thing, water finding dry soil under uncertain hands. But in that simple exchange a lesson passed from one set of hands to another, as it always had, and the garden’s quiet song took up a new voice, faint and unpracticed, and made room for it among the rest.
