Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4750 · Four Thousand Seven Hundred Fifty

Room to Breathe

The world inside the low garden wall was not dramatically different from the world outside, but it felt so. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and blooming things, a stark contrast to the sharp, salt-tinged air of the shore. The young woman stood just inside the threshold, her hand still clutching her bundle, her body tense as if expecting a challenge.

The man, seeing this, took a slow, deliberate step back, and then another, widening the distance between them. He gestured with a slight nod of his head toward a simple wooden bench tucked beneath a gnarled, shady tree. “You can set your things there,” he said, his voice quiet, not much more than a murmur on the gentle breeze. He then turned and walked over to a small, hand-pump well, the squeak of the handle a familiar, rhythmic sound in the garden’s song.

He pumped a cup of cool water and brought it back, setting it on the bench without a word, then retreated again to his own work, tending a patch of young seedlings. He did not watch her. He did not wait for a response. He simply offered the space, the seat, the water, and then went back to his tending, leaving the choice entirely to her.

At first, she remained frozen. Then her gaze tracked his movements, the gentle way he tended the small plants. She listened to the hum of the bees and the soft stir of leaves overhead. Slowly, as if testing the air, she took another step, and then another, until she reached the bench. She set her bundle down, the fabric sighing as it settled. Her fingers, which had been clenched, slowly uncurled. She looked around, her gaze lingering on the vibrant colors of the flowers, the deep green of the leaves. Her shoulders, which had been drawn up to her ears, began to drop. She was inside the wall. And there was room to breathe.
