Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4757 · Four Thousand Seven Hundred Fifty-Seven

Her Own Plot

The quiet woman coiled the mended net, her movements efficient and practiced. The young woman watched, her own hands still feeling the echo of the twine. The shared work had created a new, unspoken bond between them.

The quiet woman then turned and gestured for the young woman to follow. She led her away from the nets and the stone wall, to a small, overlooked corner of the garden. Here, a patch of earth lay bare, waiting. The soil was dark and rich, a stark contrast to the pale sand of the shore.

The quiet woman knelt and ran her hand through the soil, her touch reverent. She then looked up at the young woman, a question in her eyes. When the young woman nodded, a flicker of understanding passing between them, the quiet woman reached into a small pouch at her side. She pulled out a handful of seeds and placed them in the young woman’s open palm.

“Here,” the quiet woman said, her voice a low, gentle rasp, unused to speech. “For you.”

The young woman looked at the seeds, then at the plot of earth, then back at the woman. The two words hung in the air, a gift more precious than the seeds themselves. It spoke of trust, of acceptance, of belonging.

The young woman knelt and pressed the first seed into the earth. It was her own plot. Her own work. Her own place in the world. She was no longer a stranger, a survivor, a refugee. She was a gardener.
