Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4772 · Four Thousand Seven Hundred Seventy-Two

Under a Foreign Sky

The day drew on, the sun arcing across the wide northern sky, its light softening as the afternoon mellowed. The shadows of the dwelling and the low shrubs stretched longer across the ground, reaching towards the newly turned earth where the seeds now rested. It was in this quiet light that the two women returned to the small plot, moving with a shared, unspoken purpose that had grown between them since the morning’s planting.

The woman of the north carried a heavy earthen pitcher, its surface worn smooth with use, filled with cool, clear water drawn from her well. The traveller walked beside her, her own hands empty, her role now that of a watchful guardian to the gift she had brought so far. They stopped at the edge of the patch of soil, a small island of dark soil in the wider ground.

The northern woman knelt first, setting the pitcher down carefully. She looked to the traveller, a silent invitation in her eyes. The traveller knelt in turn, her gaze fixed on the ground. She placed her hands gently on the earth on either side of where a seed had been sown, her fingers spread as if to prevent the precious soil from washing away, a small, human dam against the coming water.

With the traveller’s hands in place, the northern woman lifted the pitcher. She tilted it slowly, a steady stream of water darkening the soil, sinking in around the invisible seeds. It was a slow, deliberate act, a baptism for the new life they had planted together. She did not pour it all at once, but moved from spot to spot, a careful offering to each buried promise.

When the pitcher was empty, she set it aside. They both remained for a moment, their hands on the damp, dark earth, the scent of wet soil rising to meet them. The water had been given, a seal on the day’s work. The northern woman was now the caretaker, tending the southern gift, nurturing its fragile hope of taking root and growing under a foreign sky.
