Chapter 4905 · Four Thousand Nine Hundred Five

The Mark the Holding Made

The cold held them indoors through the short afternoon, and the girl sat with her book open on the table, though she wrote nothing. For once she was looking at the book itself rather than at the pages. She turned it in her hands and found the cover had gone soft at one corner, worn round where her thumb came to rest each time she carried it. She had never set that down on any leaf inside. It had happened to the book without her ever meaning it, a change made only by the holding.

When she looked closer she found the book was full of such marks. The spine had loosened where it fell open most, at the crowded pages of the first planting, so that it parted there of its own accord. A faint darkening ran along the top edge of many leaves where her hand had steadied them. On the back there was a pale ring from a cup set down in some hour she could not name. None of it was written. All of it had been true.

Nyra was near, at some quiet mending, and she looked over at the girl turning the worn book in her hands. “You have kept more than you set down,” she said. “That book has been keeping you, all these years, as much as you have kept it. Every day you carried it left a little of the day on the cover.”

The girl asked how a thing could hold what was never written into it. Nyra set the mending down. “The pages tell what you chose,” she said. “The cover tells what you did not choose. One is the record you keep. The other is the record the book keeps of you.” The girl ran her thumb along the soft corner and felt how plainly it was so.

She understood then that the book carried a second record beside the one she wrote, made only by return and use, deepening for as long as she kept coming back to it. No entry could hold the shape of her own hand the way the cover had taken it. She closed the book and laid her palm over the worn corner, and left that keeping to the book, which did it better than any word she might have set there.
