Chapter 4930 · Four Thousand Nine Hundred Thirty

What She Carried Forward

The old book had grown too worn to trust. Its spine had loosened, and whole corners had gone soft as cloth. Nyra set a new blank book beside it on the table and understood that not every page would make the passage. To copy a book was not to copy a life. It was to choose which parts of a life would be carried into the years ahead.

She began with the entries that had earned their place by being asked for again and again. The date the far bed first took frost. The season the beans came late and then came all at once. These were the lines the household returned to, the ones a hand reached for without thinking. They went into the new book first, in a clean and steady column.

Then came the harder work, the deciding of what to leave behind. A whole winter of small complaints about the weather. A tally of days that had mattered to no one but the weather itself. Nyra read each of these once more before letting it go, and she found that letting go was its own kind of keeping. To choose not to copy a line was to have read it all the same, to have weighed it and set it down with care.

The girl watched from across the table and wondered why so much would be allowed to fall away. Nyra did not answer in words. She only turned the new book toward the light, where the chosen entries stood plain and few, and let the shape of the choosing speak. A record that held everything would hold nothing well. A record that chose could be read.

When the copying was done, the old book lay on the table, heavy with all that had not been carried forward. Nyra did not throw it out. She set it on the low shelf where the worn books rested, not as a record now but as the ground the new record had grown from. The years ahead would read the chosen few pages. The many pages left behind would keep, in their own quiet way, the reason the few had been chosen.
