Chapter 4948 · Four Thousand Nine Hundred Forty-Eight

The Weight and the Basket

The girl found the entry while she was counting jars along the low shelf. One line of the ledger held a number for the beans, and beside it, in the same hand, the same yield was set down a second time in a measure of another kind. The first count was in baskets. The second was in weight. She had never seen Nyra record a thing twice on one line, so she carried the open book out to the garden.

Nyra was on her knees at the edge of the bean rows, easing weeds from the wet ground. She looked at the line the girl held out, and then she rose and went to the shed. She came back holding one of the old baskets, the kind woven years before by a neighbor now gone. She set it on the ground between them and turned it slowly so the girl could see how the weave had loosened and the base had begun to give way.

The basket, Nyra showed her, was not the size it had once been. A measure woven of reed changes with the seasons of use. It swells in the damp and shrinks in the dry, and after enough years it holds less than it held when it was new. A number of baskets, written alone, would drift as the basket itself drifted. The reader of a far season might hold a basket of one size and read a record made by a basket of another.

Weight did not drift in that way. A stone of a known heft, kept beside the scale, stayed the stone it was. So Nyra had set the yield down in both. The baskets gave the girl a picture she could see and lift and carry in her arms. The weight gave the far reader a number that would keep its meaning long after every basket in the shed had loosened into nothing.

The girl took the book back to the shelf and read the doubled line once more. She understood now that the two numbers were not a waste of ink but a kind of bridge. One measure reached the hand of the present, warm and near. The other reached a hand not yet born, one that might have lost the baskets entirely. Between them the harvest of that year would keep, in a form that no lost basket could carry off.
