Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4974 · Four Thousand Nine Hundred Seventy-Four

The Bolder Figure

The harvest came in that morning heavier than any week before. The girl carried the last basket to the table where the wide tally lay open, the record Nyra had handed to her to keep. For many days it had stayed blank under her care, and she had only read the older rows that Nyra set down alone. Now there was a real weight to enter, and the page waited for a number that would be hers.

She set the scale on the boards and lifted the beans onto it, a pod at a time, until the pointer came to rest. The reading was larger than any single day she had ever kept in her book. She read it twice, once for the eye and once for the hand, and let the figure stand in her mind before she would trust it to ink.

Nyra stood near the doorway with her hands quiet at her sides. She did not step to the scale, did not lean over the page, did not offer the number she surely already knew. She only watched, letting the weighing belong to the girl, letting the first mark be made with no word to steer it.

The girl dipped the pen and wrote the number into the handed record, the ink darker and bolder than the faded rows above it. Her hand was not yet as sure as the ones Nyra had made across the years, and the figure sat a little crooked in its column. Even so it was honest, and honest was the only thing the page had ever asked of either keeper.

When it was done the girl stepped back and looked at the two hands of writing joined on one page, the long careful rows of the woman and the one new line beneath them. Nyra gave a small nod and turned to the shelf of jars, leaving the record open where it was. The page was no longer only a thing kept for the girl to read. It had become a thing she helped to make.
