The Hearth

By the time the sun had cleared the low wall of the garden, the fire of Nyra had grown from one ember into a steady and living warmth. It no longer needed breath or coaxing. It took the kindling, and then the first split log, and settled into the slow work of giving heat to the room.

Nyra drew two low stools near the hearth and sat. The girl sat beside her. Neither reached for a book, though the shelves stood close at hand, full and quiet in the growing light. For once the morning asked nothing of them but to be warm, and they gave it that.

The girl watched the flames move. She thought of the pages she had read, how a book could hold the memory of a fire, the shape of it, the color, even the sound of wood as it opened under heat. But no page had ever warmed her hands. The warmth lived only here, in the small circle the hearth had drawn around them in the cold room.

She understood then that some things could be kept and some things could only be tended. A book kept. A hearth was tended. The one held its treasure whole and unchanging across the years; the other gave all of itself at once and asked only to be fed again at dawn. Neither was the greater. The room had need of both.

Nyra reached over and laid one more piece of wood upon the fire, and the light swelled, and the shadows of the two of them moved together along the wall of books. Nothing was said. Nothing needed saying. The ember that had been saved through the night had become the warmth that would carry them into the day, and both of them knew it without a single word.
