Chapter 5011 · Five Thousand and Eleven

The Gutter

The girl laid the ledger open and pressed both palms flat, trying to make the two pages lie level as a tabletop. Near the center the lines of writing bent away from her, curving down into the narrow shadow where the pages met. She leaned closer and turned her head, but the words there seemed to lean too, always keeping their faces half hidden.

“That part has a name,” Nyra said, not looking up from the seeds she was sorting. “We call it the gutter. It is the valley a book keeps for itself, the fold the binding will never let you open all the way.”

“Then some of the writing is lost,” the girl said. “If I cannot flatten it, I cannot read every word. A book should give me everything it holds.”

“A book holds, and a book keeps,” Nyra answered, setting a seed into its small clay dish. “The gutter is where the keeping lives. Press too hard and you crack the spine, and then the pages come loose and the order is gone. The shadow is the price of the book staying whole.”

The girl eased her hands off the paper and let the pages rise a little, breathing back into their curve. “So I read around it,” she said, and Nyra nodded. “You read around it, the way you walk around a well. The dark in the middle is not empty. It is only deep.”
