Echoes of the Real
Chapter 5017 · Five Thousand and Seventeen

The Quiet

“Listen,” Nyra said, setting the ledger down on her knee. “The room is very quiet tonight.” The girl nodded and waited, for she had learned that Nyra often began with a small thing before she reached a large one.

“Can a book hold this quiet?” the girl asked. She ran a finger along the blank margin of the page, as though the stillness might have settled there the way dust settles on a high shelf.

Nyra shook her head slowly. “A book holds the words,” she said, “but never the quiet around them. The quiet belongs to the room, and to whoever reads. It arrives only when a reader grows still enough to let it in.”

The girl thought of all the pages she had copied, each one so crowded with letters that no room seemed left for silence. “Then the quiet is mine,” she said, “and not the book’s at all.”

“Yes,” Nyra said. “The book will give you the words, season after season, and ask for nothing. The quiet you must bring yourself. That is the one part of reading no page can ever keep for you.” The girl folded her hands and let the stillness settle, glad to hold the thing the book could not.
