Chapter 5029 · Five Thousand and Twenty-Nine

The Peg

A single wooden peg stood by the door of the shed, worn smooth by years of hands, and from it hung the garden book on a loop of twine. The girl had passed it a hundred times without a thought, but this morning she stopped and lifted it down, feeling how the peg had shaped the cord into a soft curve.

“Why does it live here, on the peg, and not inside on the shelf with the others?” the girl asked, turning the book so its cover caught the early light.

“Because a book on a shelf waits to be remembered,” Nyra said, taking it gently and settling it back onto the peg. “A book on a peg by the door asks to be used. I wanted this one in my hand each time I crossed the yard, so I would never pretend the garden lived inside its pages.”

The girl considered the peg, so small a thing to hold so much. “Then the peg holds the book,” she said slowly, “but what holds the garden?”

“Nothing holds the garden,” Nyra said, and her voice was warm with the old patience. “The book holds only what we noticed of it. The peg holds the book. And the rest, the rain and the roots and the slow green work of it, holds itself, and lets us walk among it for a while.” The girl hung the book back on the peg, careful now, as though she understood a little more of what it could and could not keep.
