Chapter 5118 · Five Thousand One Hundred and Eighteen

Gusset

The grain sack had split along one lower corner, where the weight always gathered and the weave gave way first. Nyra laid it flat across the table and smoothed the torn place with the flat of her hand until the frayed threads lay open and plain. The girl leaned close and asked how a single tear could be made to hold a whole winter of grain once more.

Nyra did not sew the two torn edges straight back together, for that would only pull and split again by spring. Instead she cut a small triangle of stout cloth, a gusset, and set it into the opened corner so the sack could widen there and carry the strain across more of the weave. A flat seam holds a line, she told the girl, but a gusset holds a shape.

The girl turned the half mended sack in the lamplight and traced the new triangle with one finger. She said it seemed a strange mercy, to answer a tear by making the cloth larger rather than smaller. Nyra nodded. A thing that is only pulled tight will find the next thin place and go there, she said, but a thing given room will spread what it carries and keep.

Nyra thought then of her book of accounts, where a column could be totalled and the number set down firm and plain. A book gathers what can be set down in a line and counted, and leaves the rest to the one who was there. The page could hold the measure of grain the sack carried, but it could not hold the small triangle of cloth that let the corner widen and go on holding.

They finished the seam together, and the girl pressed the gusset flat with her thumb until it sat smooth against the weave. The sack would hold again, wider now at the worn place, ready for the weight that was coming. The book keeps the measure, and you keep the easing of it.
