Chapter 5149 · Five Thousand One Hundred and Forty-Nine

Deckle

The girl found a book whose pages did not end in a clean line. Their outer edges were rough and soft, feathered like the margin of a leaf. She ran her thumb along them and felt the small catch of each sheet. “Why are the pages ragged here?” she asked. “Did someone tear them?”

“No,” said Nyra. “That is the deckle edge. It is the mark the paper carries from the frame it was made in, before any knife came near it.” She set her own hand beside the girl’s. “Some books are cut smooth on every side. This one was left as it came.”

Nyra turned to the window and let the light fall across the rough edge, so the girl could see how it took the glow. “A straight edge tells you where a person decided the page should stop. A deckle edge tells you where the paper itself decided.” The girl nodded slowly, tracing the softness again.

“A book gathers what can be set down in a line and counted, and leaves the rest to the one who was there.” Nyra closed the cover and laid her palm flat on it. “The clean books hold the count. This one holds a little of the frame it grew in, the hands that lifted it wet, the air that dried it.”

The girl asked if she should trim it even. “Leave it,” Nyra answered. “A thing can be measured by its edge, but it is known by the way that edge was made.” She gave the book back. “The book keeps the edge, and you keep the feathering of it.”
