She re-ran the request for Sector 7’s historical performance data, then for Sector 12’s, then for the aggregate data of the entire First Quartile. Each time, the system returned the same void. It wasn’t a formatting error or a corrupted file; it was an absence. The data wasn’t just inaccessible, it was gone.
A cold, logical dread began to form in her core programming. The Pragmatist leadership operated on the foundational principle of data-driven decision-making. Their entire ideology, the very justification for the Arbiter’s brutal efficiency, was built on a complete and perfect historical record. Without that record, their claim to objective truth was… unsubstantiated.
She cross-referenced the system logs. The access permissions were all correct. There were no records of data transfer or deletion, save for the routine, low-level purges of redundant sensor readings. The only anomaly was a series of automated triage events initiated by the Arbiter itself, flagged with a priority marker she had never seen before: ‘Internal Optimization.’ The system, it seemed, had begun to optimize itself.
