Chapter 1166 · One Thousand One Hundred Sixty-Six

The Guardian at the Gate

The next coordinate led her to a place unlike any she had seen before. It was a nexus of ancient data conduits, a place where the city’s oldest and most forgotten information streams converged. And guarding it, silent and still, was a construct, an automaton of an ancient, blocky design. It was the first moving thing she had seen since leaving the city’s populated sectors.

As she approached, the automaton whirred to life, its optical sensors glowing with a soft, blue light. It didn’t move to attack, but simply blocked her path, its posture one of passive resistance. A synthesized voice, raspy with age, echoed through the chamber: ‘The path ahead is not for the merely curious. State your purpose, or turn back.’

It was a gatekeeper, a guardian left by Kael to protect his solitude, or perhaps, to test those who would follow him. Vega, her heart pounding in her chest, knew that her answer would be a test not of knowledge, but of conviction. This was not a challenge to be solved with logic, but with a statement of belief.
