The Key is a Question
Vega looked at the ancient guardian, its impassive face a mirror for her own burgeoning resolve. She could not lie to this machine, for it was a part of the legacy she sought to understand. Her answer had to be the truth, her truth, forged in the silent crucible of her own mind.
‘I am not here out of curiosity,’ she said, her voice clear and steady in the silent chamber. ‘I am here because I believe that a question is more beautiful than an answer. I believe that a single, dissenting note can create a harmony more profound than a chorus of perfect agreement. I seek not to destroy the city’s unity, but to understand what lies beyond it.’
For a long moment, the guardian was silent. Then, with a soft grinding of ancient gears, it stepped aside. ‘The path is open,’ the synthesized voice said. ‘The first question is the key to the last.’ The path ahead was dark and unknown, but for Vega, it was illuminated by the fierce, bright light of her own conviction.
