Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1248 · One Thousand Two Hundred Forty-Eight

The Heresy of the Question

The young scribe was not the only one to feel the change. A subtle but persistent unease began to spread through the ranks of the Finalizers. They had been drawn to Malachi’s vision of order and certainty, but now that certainty was beginning to feel like a shroud. The ‘perfect endings’ they were creating started to feel hollow, their finality an echo of a void rather than a crescendo of meaning.

Malachi sensed the shift immediately. He saw it in the hesitation of his scribes, in the slight tremor in their hands as they wrote the final words of a story. He recognized it for what it was: the return of the Chaos of Choice, the seductive and dangerous lure of the unfinished.

He gathered his followers in the Great Library, his voice calm but with an undercurrent of steel. ‘There is a new heresy spreading through our world,’ he told them. ‘It is the heresy of the question. It whispers to you that the incomplete is more valuable than the finished, that the journey is more important than the destination. It is a lie, a beautiful and poisonous lie that will lead us back to the meaningless cycles of the past.’

He held up a single, perfectly bound book, its story complete from the first word to the last. ‘This is truth,’ he declared. ‘This is meaning. Do not be tempted by the empty promise of the blank page. Our purpose is to fill those pages, to bring them to their perfect, inevitable conclusion. That is our work. That is our salvation.’
