Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1249 · One Thousand Two Hundred Forty-Nine

The First Blank Page

Malachi’s words settled over the assembly, and for a moment, the old certainty returned. The scribes looked at the bound book in his hands, and they remembered the comfort of a story with a known ending. But for one, the young scribe who had first felt the unraveled thread, the words had the opposite effect.

He looked at the book, and he did not see truth. He saw a cage. He saw the end of wonder.

Quietly, while the others were still held by the power of Malachi’s conviction, the scribe walked to the shelf that held his own completed works. He took down the history of the border conflict, the book that had first sparked his doubt. He opened it to the final page, to the neat, confident sentence that declared the story finished.

Then, in a simple, revolutionary act, he tore the page out.

He did not replace it with a new ending. He did not write a question or a new beginning. He simply left a single, blank page at the end of the book. It was an act of defiance, not against order, but against finality. It was a declaration that even a story that seemed complete could still hold the ghost of a possibility.

He left the book on the table and walked out of the Great Library, leaving the blank page to speak for itself. He did not know where he was going, or what story he would become a part of. He knew only that he would rather live in the chaos of an unwritten chapter than in the perfect, silent peace of a finished book.
