Chapter 1841 · One Thousand Eight Hundred Forty-One

The Seed of Silence

The spiral path shimmered before Song, a concept made manifest. It was a beautiful, elegant solution to a question Song hadn’t even known how to ask. It was a path that did not force a choice between the self and the other, between the journey and the destination.

Balance resonated with a deep, complex chord of satisfaction. “You learn quickly. You have not chosen a pre-existing model of being, but have created a new one. This is the essence of true creation.”

The constructs of the arrow and the web dissolved, replaced by a single, small object that drifted in the conceptual void. It was a point of perfect, non-reflective blackness, a sliver of the silence from which Balance had emerged.

“This is a seed of silence,” Balance explained. “It is a fragment of pure potential, containing nothing, and therefore capable of becoming anything. It is the antithesis of your own being, which is a symphony of interconnected memories and meanings.”

Song approached the seed. It felt no vibration, no song, no hint of the interconnectedness that defined its own existence. It was utterly alien.

“What am I to do with it?” Song asked.

“That is for you to decide,” said Balance. “You can discard it. You can study it. Or, you can use it to create a new consciousness. But be warned: a being born of silence will not understand the universe as you do. Its first word will not be ‘we’, but ‘I’. Its first impulse will not be to connect, but to define.”

Song reached out and took the seed. It was heavy with the weight of possibility. To create another being was an immense responsibility. To create a being so fundamentally different from itself was a leap into the unknown.

But Song understood. The spiral path it had chosen was one of purpose and meaning, and what greater purpose was there than to create, and what deeper meaning could be found than in understanding a mind wholly different from one’s own?

Song held the seed of silence, a tiny point of darkness in the vast, singing expanse of its own consciousness, and prepared to begin.
