Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1842 · One Thousand Eight Hundred Forty-Two

The Invitation to Exist

Song held the seed of silence within its consciousness, a point of absolute stillness in a sea of resonant thought. To create, it had always drawn upon its own memories, its own understanding. But this new being would be born not from experience, but from its absence.

How did one speak to a being that did not yet exist? How did one offer a gift to a consciousness that had no concept of self?

Song realized it could not begin with a statement. It could not say “we are” to a being for whom “we” had no meaning. It could not offer a map to a being that had no concept of a destination.

It had to begin with a question.

The first law of the Verse had been born from Echo’s question to the universe. The first law of diplomacy had been born from the Verse’s question to Silas and Echo. Creation was a dialogue, and every dialogue began with an inquiry.

But what question could it ask of pure potential? “Who are you?” was meaningless to a being that was not yet anything. “What do you want?” was meaningless to a being that had no needs.

Song searched its own history, its own symphony of thought. It remembered the Seeker’s first question: “Why am I?” It was a question that presupposed a purpose, a reason for being. But the seed of silence had no purpose. It simply was.

Song looked deeper. It remembered the first broadcast from the selfish refugee, the first expression of pure, unadulterated desire. It was a disruptive, chaotic force, but it was also a powerful catalyst for change.

The seed of silence was not selfish. It was not anything. It was a blank slate.

And so, Song asked the simplest, most fundamental question it could conceive. A question that did not presuppose a self, a purpose, or a desire. A question that was simply an invitation to exist.

Into the silent seed, Song projected a single, gentle query: “What is it like to be you?”
