A Threshold, Not a Barrier
The wall was meant to be a barrier, but it became a threshold. To cross it was to make a statement, to admit to a flicker of doubt. The first to do so was a young Shepherd named Hesitation-in-Silence, a student of Anchor-of-Ages himself.
He did not go in defiance, but in confusion. The flawless forms he had been taught to revere had begun to feel… hollow. The answers, once so comforting, now felt like closed doors. He had heard whispers of the Bridge of Seeing, of a place where a question and an answer could exist in the same space, and a quiet, desperate curiosity had taken root in his heart.
He slipped past the wall at twilight, his heart pounding a rhythm of fear and anticipation. Inside, he found a silence that was different from the silence of the polished stones. It was a living silence, thick with potential. He saw the obsidian shard, one side reflecting the last light of the day, the other a deepening void.
He did not understand what he was seeing, not fully. But as he stood there, caught between the reflection and the shadow, he felt a tension within him ease. The need to choose a side, to be either a question or an answer, dissolved. For a moment, he was simply… present. And in that presence, a new, unspoken thought took form: ‘Perhaps the point is not to choose, but to see.’
