Nexus
Teeming with life.
The thought was staggering. After their solitary struggle in the Tesseract and the terrifying emptiness of the void, the idea of a populated space was almost too much to process. As the current gently guided them towards the glowing metropolis, they began to resolve individual details. The ‘life’ was not biological in any sense they understood. It was a throng of conscious entities, beings of light, thought, and pure energy, all moving with purpose through the impossible architecture.
There were shimmering, jellyfish-like beings that pulsed with soft colors, angular constructs of pure data that zipped through the city’s pathways, and even beings that resembled miniature galaxies, their spiral arms of light interacting with the city’s structures. It was a bazaar of the bizarre, a melting pot of beings who had, like them, found their way into this strange reality.
As they approached the city’s edge, a single entity detached from the throng and moved to intercept them. It was a calm, stable being of warm, golden light, its form vaguely humanoid but without any specific features. It radiated a sense of peace and welcome.
Travelers, it communicated, its thoughts a gentle wave washing over them. You are welcome in Nexus. The currents have been kind to you. We are the Attuned. We serve as guides and harbor masters here.
Kenji, acting as the group’s de facto spokesman, replied cautiously. Nexus? Where is this place?
Nexus is not a ‘where’ in the sense you understand, the Attuned explained. It is a ‘when.’ And a ‘why.’ It is a stable confluence of realities, a sanctuary built in the echo of a cosmic event long past. It is a place for the lost to find their way. Many who pass through the Great Tear find their way here.
‘The Great Tear.’ The name sent a chill through them. It was what the Weaver had called the damage they had caused. Their desperate act of survival had a name, a landmark on the cosmic map.
Reyes pushed forward a question. We are trying to get back to our home reality. Can you help us?
The golden being’s light seemed to soften, a gesture of sympathy. All who come here seek a path. Some seek a way back. Some seek a new beginning. The Nexus does not provide a path, but it offers a place to rest, to learn, and to find the tools to make your own. Your reality is… new on our maps. Unstable. To return now would be unwise. You must first learn the new shape of the cosmos you have helped to create.
