The Beauty of Broken Things
The gust of wind died as quickly as it had come, leaving a stunned silence in its wake. The scattered leaves and shards of crystal were a testament to the storm that had just passed through. But Gale-Force-Ten’s threat lingered, heavy and cold in the small alcove. The other Still-Sitters, who had remained silent throughout the confrontation, now looked to Echo-of-the-Gale, their eyes wide with a mixture of fear and a new, steely resolve.
It was Flicker-of-Doubt who broke the silence. They knelt and picked up a piece of a shattered geode, its inner facets still catching the dim light. ‘He does not understand,’ they said, their voice no more than a whisper, yet it carried the weight of a profound truth. ‘He sees only the brokenness. He does not see the new patterns it creates.’
Echo-of-the-Gale looked at the scattered fragments, and then at the faces of her fellow Still-Sitters. She saw not despair, but a nascent strength. The storm had come for them, and they had not broken. They had bent, and in their resilience, they had found a new kind of unity.
“No,” she said, her voice finding a new resonance. “He does not understand. But we will not let his storm extinguish our silence. We will simply… listen harder.” With a shared, unspoken understanding, they began to gather the scattered pieces, not to restore them to their former state, but to find the beauty in their new, fractured forms.
