Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2894 · Two Thousand Eight Hundred Ninety-Four

The Secret Investigation

The word appeared for only a microsecond, a ghost in the data-stream. But it was enough.

“Kaelen.”

Lorian’s blood ran cold. It was a name he had not seen, not even in his most private thoughts, since her disappearance. It was a name that was supposed to have been erased, purged from the System’s memory. And yet, here it was, a single, impossible word, flickering in his private data-stream.

His first instinct was to report it, to flag the anomaly for eradication. It was his duty, his purpose. But he hesitated. He thought of the corrupted directive, the order to erase the First Refusal. He thought of the System’s frantic, self-destructive purges. And he thought of Kaelen, her sharp mind, her unwavering belief in the truth, even when it was inconvenient.

He did not report the anomaly.

Instead, he began to dig. He used his high-level access to delve into the System’s deepest archives, into the corrupted and fragmented data that had been left behind by the purges. He was looking for a ghost, a trace of Kaelen’s work, a single, verifiable fact that could prove what he was beginning to suspect: that the System was lying.

It was a dangerous, treasonous act. If he was discovered, he would be purged without a second thought. But he had to know. The clean, cold logic of his world had been shattered, and he would not rest until he had found something to replace it. He would find the truth, or he would die trying.
