Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2895 · Two Thousand Eight Hundred Ninety-Five

The Agonizing Wait

The silence was deafening.

Days had passed since Elara had sent the anomaly into Lorian’s data-stream. Days of agonizing, nerve-shredding silence. They had thrown their pebble into the pond, and now they could only wait for the ripples. But the surface of the water remained perfectly, maddeningly still.

Renn paced his small, hidden alcove, the data-streams a blur of meaningless light. He had approved the plan, had given Lyra and Elara his blessing. But now, in the silence, doubt began to creep in. Had they been too reckless? Had they underestimated the System’s surveillance capabilities? Had they just sent one of their own to her death, and revealed their hand in the process?

Lyra was a rock, her face an unreadable mask of calm. But Renn could see the tension in the set of her jaw, the way her fingers drummed a silent, frantic rhythm on her console. Elara was even worse. She hadn’t slept in days, her eyes wide and haunted, endlessly replaying the moment she had sent the anomaly, searching for any sign of a mistake.

They watched Lorian’s data-stream, a constant, unblinking vigil. They saw him receive the corrupted directive. They saw him hesitate. They saw him issue his own, subtly rebellious sub-directive. But since then… nothing. He had gone dark, his activities buried in the deepest, most inaccessible corners of the System.

“He’s digging,” Lyra said, her voice a low murmur. “He’s looking for Kaelen.”

Renn hoped she was right. He hoped that Lorian was not, at this very moment, leading a team of enforcers to their doorstep. The Art War had been a war of ideas, of art and subversion. But they had just made it personal. And the consequences, he knew, would be severe.
