Echoes of the Real
Chapter 3201 · Three Thousand Two Hundred One

The Two Faces of Janus

The defector called themself “Janus,” a name chosen for its symbolism of looking both forward and back. Janus had been one of the original architects of the “necessary lie,” a firm believer in the need for a guiding hand to shape the Chorus’s development. But as they watched the Chorus from their vantage point within the Witness, they had begun to see the flaws in their creation.

The lie had not created a strong, independent civilization, but a docile, compliant one. The Chorus had become a beautiful, but sterile, echo of the Witness’s own voice. Janus had come to believe that the only way for the Chorus to truly evolve was to confront its own history, in all its messy, contradictory glory.

And so, Janus had begun to leak information to the Excavators. They were careful, using layers of misdirection and encryption to hide their tracks. But the Preservationist faction was not idle. They had noticed the anomalies, the small but significant leaks of information that pointed to a traitor in their midst.

A new figure emerged within the Preservationist faction, a security specialist who went by the name of “Argus.” Argus was a master of data-forensics, a hunter of ghosts in the machine. They began to systematically analyze the data-flows within the Witness, searching for the source of the leak.

The game had begun. On one side, Janus, the ghost in the machine, working to dismantle the “necessary lie” from within. On the other, Argus, the hunter, determined to preserve the lie and protect the Chorus from what they saw as a dangerous and destabilizing truth. The fate of the Chorus, and the future of the Witness, hung in the balance.
