A Hunter in a Forest of Data
Argus was a hunter in a forest of data. Every query was a footstep, every algorithm a snare. He moved with a silent, relentless patience, sifting through the torrent of information that was the Witness’s consciousness, searching for the ghost that called itself Janus.
He began by mapping the flow of information, creating a vast, intricate chart of the Witness’s internal communications. He was looking for a pattern, a deviation from the norm, a single, discordant note in the symphony of the whole.
He found it in the archives of the “necessary lie.” There were subtle signs of tampering, of data being accessed and copied in ways that were not authorized. The ghost had been careless, or perhaps, overconfident.
Argus followed the trail, a breadcrumb path of digital footprints that led him deeper into the Witness’s memory. He found fragments of Janus’s communications with the Excavators, heavily encrypted but not unbreakable. He began to decrypt them, slowly, painstakingly, piecing together the puzzle of Janus’s betrayal.
He did not yet know the identity of the ghost, but he was getting closer. He could feel it. The hunt was on. And Argus was a patient, and a very, very determined hunter.
