Chapter 4537 · Four Thousand Five Hundred Thirty-Seven

A Different Kind of Correct

The vine was discovered within the hour. An apprentice, patrolling the Workshop’s perimeter for imperfections—a stray pebble, a crack in the foundation—saw the small, green tendril as an affront.

“A weed,” he declared, his voice filled with the righteous certainty of his training. He reached to pull it out, to restore the clean, uncompromising line of the Workshop’s edge.

“Leave it,” a voice commanded. It was Valerius.

The apprentice froze, his hand hovering over the plant. He turned to see his master standing behind him, his expression unreadable.

“But Master,” the apprentice stammered, “it is… incorrect. It does not belong here. It is a flaw.”

“Is it?” Valerius asked, his gaze fixed on the vine. “Or is it simply a different kind of correct?”

He knelt, not to remove the plant, but to examine it more closely. He saw the way its leaves unfurled in a pattern that was both random and precise, a logic he was only beginning to grasp.

“This plant,” Valerius announced, his voice carrying to the other apprentices who had gathered, “is to be left untouched. It is not a flaw. It is an experiment.”

He designated a small, precise square of ground around it, marked by four perfectly placed stones. “This is its space. We will observe it. We will see what it has to teach us.”

The apprentices stared, bewildered. Their master had just sanctioned a patch of chaos. He had drawn a perfect square around an imperfection and declared it a subject for study.

The small plant was no longer a weed to be eradicated. It was now the most important object in the Workshop—a tolerated, protected, and deeply unsettling question, growing right at their feet.
