Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4743 · Four Thousand Seven Hundred Forty-Three

Tending the Unseen

The dawn came, and with it, the man. He carried a small wooden bucket, filled from the well at the edge of the garden. The water was cold and clear, a stark contrast to the dark, silent earth of his small patch.

He knelt, just as he had when he had planted the seeds. The ground was unchanged. There was no sign of life, no hint of the promise held within the soil. It was just a square of dirt, indistinguishable from any other patch of earth in the garden.

He dipped his hand into the bucket and let the water trickle through his fingers, a gentle rain on the barren ground. It was a slow, deliberate act. He was not flooding the earth, but offering a drink. The water darkened the soil, then soaked in, leaving no trace.

He did this every morning. The woman saw him. The rope-maker saw him. They did not speak of it. They simply continued their own work, their own quiet tending of the garden. They understood the patience required. They had seen the slow, deliberate work of the worms, the gradual unfolding of a leaf, the patient wait for a bloom.

The man was learning this patience now. He was learning to tend the unseen. He was learning to trust the slow, silent work of the earth. He was learning to have faith in a future he could not yet see.

Each morning, he brought his bucket of water. Each morning, he offered it to the silent earth. Each morning, he looked for a sign of life. And each morning, he found none.

But still, he returned. The work continued.
