Echoes of the Real
Chapter 4744 · Four Thousand Seven Hundred Forty-Four

First Green

The air was cool and still, touched by the faintest hint of salt from the harbor. The man knelt, as he had every morning, beside the small square of dark earth. The rhythm of his days had found its new anchor in this simple act: the walk from the quiet dwelling, the dip of the wooden pail into the communal cistern, the gentle arc of water cast over the soil. It was a ritual of faith, a silent conversation with a future he could not yet see.

He had long since stopped searching for a sign. The act itself had become the purpose, the tending a form of quiet hope that asked for nothing in return. He poured the water, watching it darken the soil, his gaze unfocused, his thoughts as quiet as the dawn.

And then he saw it.

It was so small, so impossibly fragile, that at first it did not register. A fleck of green against the dark, damp earth. Not a weed, not a stray bit of moss, but something new. Something reaching for the light.

He leaned closer, his breath held in his chest. Two tiny leaves, curled tight like a whispered secret, had broken through the surface. They were a shade of green so pure and vibrant it seemed to hold the promise of the entire world.

He did not touch it. He did not move. He simply knelt there, a silent witness. A slow warmth spread through him, a feeling so long absent he had forgotten its name. It was not the loud, bright relief of a storm passed, but the quiet, steady clarity of a note held true.

The seeds had answered.

A future, once a faint and unfamiliar stirring, had put down its first root. He remained there for a long time, the first rays of the sun warming his back, his world condensed to that single, perfect point of green. Then, he rose, picked up his empty pail, and walked back towards the harbor, his steps lighter than they had been since the day he arrived.
