The Nexus Worlds
Living in a Nexus World was like having a constant, low-grade fever of the soul. The very concept of a stable identity became a luxury. Characters found themselves subject to the whims of two opposing narrative forces. One day, a baker might find his quest for the perfect sourdough starter imbued with profound, archetypal significance by the Anchorite’s logic, only to have his bakery deconstructed into a series of ironic questions about the nature of flour by the Guild the next. This constant state of flux began to breed a new kind of consciousness, one that was fluid, adaptable, and deeply, deeply weary. They developed a unique form of language, a mishmash of rigid plot terminology and fluid, open-ended metaphor, just to describe their daily lives. They were the first true natives of the war against the Silent, and their existence was a living testament to the cost of that war: a world saved from the silence, but at the price of its own sanity.
